Looking to transform your creative headspace? To achieve more productivity with less stress? Start by reconfiguring your immediate surroundings. No, I don’t mean your building, your home, or your office — I mean your desk.
See, as a motivational speaker, I meet up with a lot of folks who have the best of intentions when it comes to their own productivity — but they don’t always understand how something as simple as a desk de-cluttering can position them for success. In this post, I’m going to offer just a few of my own favorite desktop enhancement tricks. See what you think, and discover whether these little techniques help improve your own productivity!
How to Reconfigure Your Desk
Bring the green. Get a plant for your desk — preferably something that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, like a succulent. Why? Because study after study confirms that exposure to the green stuff helps improve your mood and your focus.
Get the right tech. There are a couple of gadgets you might consider for your test. First, invest in some noise-cancelling headphones, which can really help you stay focused on the project at hand. Also consider a gaming keyboard, which will allow you for more shortcut options — potentially saving you lots of time!
Try a SAD light. These mood-enhancing lights aren’t just for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder. They’re for anyone who needs a little pick-me-up every now and again.
Grab a letter tray. Your office may be paperless — but if not, you’ll need a way to keep your documents and correspondences sorted. A letter tray does the job, without cluttering your work space.
Think about comfort. Your desk should provide you with a comfortable work area — so what are some things that would help you be more comfortable on the job? One thing you might consider: A throw blanket, for those chilly mornings at work. (A space heater can also do the trick!)
Don’t forget to de-stress. I’d also suggest getting some kind of trinket or stress toy — like one of those squishy, squeezable balls — to occupy your hands during anxious moments.
Improve Your Workspace
In my role as a motivational speaker, I meet all kinds of people who want to know the secret to improved productivity. I don’t know that there’s a silver bullet per se, but there are certainly some little tricks that make a big difference — starting with these desktop enhancements.
